Learning and Development Programme

Our learning and development programme helps members of the public and professionals develop the skills they need to ensure there is a strong public voice in health research and evidence–based practice. People in Health West of England aims to meet diverse learning and development needs, for example, including providing an introduction to public involvement as well as more specialist workshops for facilitators. We also provide information about training and events relevant for public involvement provided by partner organisations in the area and beyond.

Our workshops are free to people based in the West of England. Our area includes Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, Gloucestershire, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire and most of Wiltshire.

The first two introductory workshops provide a good starting place for staff or members of the public. The other workshops below are on specific topics and those attending may need to have some involvement experience.

In response to Covid-19 we are offering training online (using a video conferencing) for the present, but we hope to be able to offer face to face workshops again soon.

Our workshops are free to anyone based in the West of England area. This area includes Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, Gloucestershire, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire and most of Wiltshire.

By members of the public we mean public contributors who might be patients, service users, family members, or carers. By professionals we mean academics, researchers, research managers, health and care professionals and other staff organising involvement activities.

Examples of our workshops include:

Building Research Partnerships. This is an introductory one-day workshop on public involvement that explores how the public (including patients, service users, carers, and family members) can get involved in health and social care research and work with professionals (researchers, academics and health professionals) in the research process.
Enhancing Facilitation Skills. This half-day workshop is for researchers, health professionals and other staff currently running public involvement meetings and groups. It is also for members of the public who are, or will be, facilitating involvement activities.
Human Factors in patient safety training
Using and Understanding Research Evidence. This is a one-day workshop for members of the public providing an introduction to research and the tools and skills needed to find and assess the reliability of research evidence relating to health.
Workshops for members of the public to generate ideas for health research. From time to time we run workshops to support members of the public to refine ideas about health related issues they feel are important and develop them into research questions.
