Seminar on public involvement in research: collaborating beyond words

May 23, 2019 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

This seminar on public involvement in research is for all UWE Bristol staff and students as well as other interested health researchers and public involvement professionals in the West of England, and members of the public.

It is free to attend and tea/coffee will be provided.

About the speaker

Katherine Broomfield
Speech and Language Therapist
HEE/NIHR Clinical Doctoral Fellow

Katherine previously led a local augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) service in Gloucestershire; part of the adult speech and language therapy team. AAC, or communication aids, are external devices that support people who cannot speak clearly enough to get their message across. In 2016, she secured funding from Health Education England (HEE) and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) to complete a Clinical Doctoral Fellowship.

Katherine’s project aims to develop a greater understanding about why people do and do not use AAC devices and how they view success with using them. In this seminar, she will talk about her experience of involving patients and members of the public who use AAC to support them to communicate and the impact that has had on her research.
